Cerebral Palsy

Disorders of movement or posture whose origin is in the brain are known as Cerebral Palsy. The primary conditions that produce them are varied, such as trauma, encephalitis, lack of oxygen to the brain, etc. The intellect may be unaltered, meaning that the patients can be fully aware of their physical limitations.

The more frequent motor disorders are Spasticity, Athetosis and Dystonia. The most important approach to the motor problem is through intensive physical therapy and education, which probably will have to be undertaken for a lifetime. For others, one or more orthopedic operations will be needed, to correct muscles or joints. The support from the family is extremely important to obtain the best from these individuals.

Others will benefit from STEREOTACTIC NEUROSURGERY , which could diminish Spasticity or some abnormal movements and therefore improve function and facilitate the rehabilitation.
